Posted on January 16, 2013

This year’s Canadian Screen Awards will host a large delegation from the heart of the continent. Manitobans and Manitoba projects have been nominated for a total of 36 Canadian Screen Awards.

Among the Manitoba contenders, the locally-shot project Goon had the most nominations for a feature film, including Best Screenplay, Actors in a Supporting Role (Jay Baruchel and Kim Coates), Directing, Make-Up and Cinematography. Manitoba production company Inferno Pictures co-produced the film. Other Manitoba films nominated include Mad Ship (Costume Design), Indie Game: The Movie (Feature Length Documentary) and Keep a Modest Head (Short Documentary).

On the television side, Less Than Kind, produced by Buffalo Gal Pictures, has received 10 nods, including Best Comedy Program or Series. The Manitoba production company Frantic Films saw their highly successful television projects Pitchin’ In, Todd and the Book of Pure Evil and The Wrath of Grapes: The Don Cherry Story 2 nominated for a total of 11 awards, including Best Dramatic Mini-Series or TV Movie. Other television nominations include Smarty Plants (Merit Motion Pictures) and The Pastor’s Wife (Norma Bailey). Manitobans Wab Kinew and Ryan Kennedy were nominated for other Canadian projects.

“This is a significant number of nominations for Manitoba. This level of recognition shows the strength of our industry and highlights our ability to produce some of the highest quality content in the country,” said Carole Vivier, CEO of Manitoba Film & Music. “We have a thriving industry because of the support our filmmakers and artists receive through all levels of government. These nominations prove the value of this support.”

“These nominations speak to the diversity of production happening here in Manitoba,” said Nicole Matiation, Executive Director of On Screen Manitoba. “Not only are Manitoba productions nominated in several genres - from short film to feature documentary to comedic series to mini-series - but Manitoba creative talent was nominated in a variety of departments, including sound, costume design, picture editing, photography, acting, directing and writing. “

The Canadian Screen Awards will be held on March 3. This is the first year that the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television will amalgamate the Gemini and Genie Awards into one event. Below please find a list of all Manitoba nominees.
