Manitoba projects were well represented among Canadian Screen Award winners this year.

The locally-created comedy series Less Than Kind, shot in Winnipeg, took home four awards including Best Direction (Kelly Makin), Best Photography (Michael Marshall), Best Picture Editing (Paul Winestock) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting or Guest Role (Nicholas Campbell). Less Than Kind concluded this year in its fourth season. The series was produced by Manitoba’s Buffalo Gal Pictures and recognized for numerous Canadian Screen Awards during its run, including Best Comedy Series.

The Manitoba-lensed docu-drama We Were Children, which tells personal stories of residential school survivors, took home two awards for Best Photography and Best Sound. Produced by local company Eagle Vision, We Were Children was nominated for a total of four Canadian Screen Awards.

The made for television movie Jack, also produced by Eagle Vision, walked away with two awards for Best Performance by a Lead Actor (Rick Roberts) and Best Performance by a Lead Actress (Sook-Yin Lee). Jack is based on the life of former NDP Leader Jack Layton.

“We are proud to have such diverse projects take home awards this year,” said Carole Vivier, CEO/Film Commissioner of Manitoba Film & Music. “Buffalo Gal and Eagle Vision have established themselves as some of the most accomplished production companies in the country. They deserve the highest accolades for these projects, all of which tell important and well-crafted Canadian stories.”

“These awards reflect the capacity of Manitoba production companies to compete with the very best producers in Canada, and each of the productions showcases the scope of talent in Manitoba’s world class crew,” said Nicole Matiation, Executive Director On Screen Manitoba.  “Congratulations also to Manitoba production companies Inferno Pictures, Merit Motion Pictures, Blinkworks and Frantic Films for their nominations to the Canadian Screen Awards.”
