Posted on March 26, 2015

Manitoba acts came out on top at this year’s JUNO Awards with five wins, including two for MFM-supported albums.

Polaris winner and prodigious force of nature Tanya Tagaq took home the JUNO for Aboriginal Album of the Year for Animism, which was also nominated for Alternative Album of the Year. This MFM-supported release from the Brandon-based throat singer has been called ‘groundbreaking’ by critics and has received accolades from the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine.

MFM-supported act The Bros. Landreth took home a JUNO for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Group. Their album Let it Lie has been embraced by local, national and international audiences alike, landing them a deal with prestigious American label Slate Creek Records.

“We could not be more proud of these phenomenal Manitoba artists, whose talent and work ethic are truly staggering,” said Carole Vivier, CEO & Film Commissioner at Manitoba Film & Music. “With the help of strong and sustained government support, these acts have been able to achieve their full potential and turn their talent into success.”

Other Manitoba winners include legendary children’s entertainer Fred Penner who was awarded Children’s Album of the Year for Where in the World; violinist James Ehnes for Classical Album of the Year Solo or Chamber Ensemble; and artists Roberta Hansen and Mike Latchislaw for Recording Package of the Year for Steve Bell’s Pilgrimage.

This year’s Manitoba JUNO nominees included troubadour Del Barber for his MFM-supported album Prairieography, children’s entertainer LuLu et le Matou, as well as classical musicians Gordon Fitzell and Karl Stobbe.
