Manitoba Film & Video Tax Credit Extended to 2019

Posted on May 1, 2015

In a budget that underlined the importance of job creation, the Manitoba Government extended the Manitoba Film and Video Tax Credit and the Manitoba Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit to December 31, 2019.

Announced on April 30, 2015, the extension comes well in advance of the original renewal date slated for the end of 2016.

“Recognized for its world class crew, talented actors and highly experienced producers, Manitoba now has the most attractive tax credit in Canada,” said Nicole Matiation, Executive Director of On Screen Manitoba. “The Province of Manitoba is a strong partner in the development and growth in the linear and interactive content production industries”

“This early renewal is a great vote of confidence from the Government of Manitoba,” said Carole Vivier, CEO & Film Commissioner for Manitoba Film & Music. “Since the instatement of the original tax credit in 1997, the Province has continued to recognize the economic and creative value of this industry. Sustained commitment has allowed this industry to thrive, enhancing economic impact and creating jobs for skilled and creative Manitobans.”

The Manitoba linear content production industry produces over 60 film, television and web-based stories annually including series. This past year 13 feature films, 2 dramatic series, 8 factual series and 29 documentaries shot in Manitoba, creating some 1300 highly skilled jobs.  One of this year’s biggest projects included the 22-episode series The Pinkertons, which employed 95% Manitoba crew, with 96% of acting roles filled by Manitobans.

On average the government of Manitoba invests $17 million in the film and video tax credit each year, which in turn attracts investment over $58 million - funds that would not otherwise come to Manitoba.

With new, highly-skilled positions being created on an ongoing basis in Manitoba, the government’s commitment to supporting skills, training and education help ensure a competitive workforce for today and tomorrow.

Over the past 25 years On Screen Manitoba and Manitoba Film & Music have worked in with government and other industry stakeholders to ensure Manitoba remains engaged as long-term competitive player in the media production industry. During the ten year period ending in 2013 the industry has attracted over $1 billion worth of production volume over half of which was spent in the province of Manitoba on labour, goods and services.
