The Manitoba Film & Sound Recording Development Corporation (MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC) is a statutory corporation of government proclaimed under the Manitoba Film and Sound Recording Development Corporation Act funded by the Province of Manitoba through the Department of Culture, Heritage and Tourism. The management of MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC reports directly to the Board of Directors appointed by the Lieutenant Governor.

MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC supports Manitoba film and music through our objectives, which are to create, stimulate, employ and invest in Manitoba by developing and promoting Manitoba companies, producing and marketing film, television, video and music recording projects as well as to promote Manitoba as a film location for off-shore production companies. MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC is a member of the Association of Film Commissions International (AFCI). MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC EXISTS SO OUR FILM & MUSIC INDUSTRIES FLOURISH!

MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC ensures Manitoba’s film and music recording industries flourish through:

Program Delivery and Administration:

  • through community and industry consultation
  • quantifying the need and developing programs
  • setting program criteria and guidelines
  • providing program funds to qualifying recipients in the forms of equity investments, loans and grants
  • administering and monitoring program projects
  • liaising with broadcasters and distributors

Marketing:

  • providing services as the Film Commission for the Province of Manitoba
  • administering the Manitoba Film and Video Production Tax Credit
  • attending various conferences, industry events, trade shows and festivals as representatives for Manitoba’s film and music recording industries
  • marketing ventures
  • the coordination and compilation of the annual Manitoba Film and Television Production Guide
  • production and execution of the Manitoba Film & Music Showcase
  • sponsoring of various industry events and programs within the province

Advocacy:

  • promoting and advocating Manitoba’s film and music recording industries and their interests through representation nationally to organizations such as: the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Cooperation), Telefilm Canada, the Canadian Television Fund, FACTOR (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent On Recordings) , Canadian Heritage, and through attendance at international events
  • through innovative programs and services, together with Manitoba’s creative, enthusiastic and dedicated film and music recording talent and the Province of Manitoba’s continued support, we continue to stimulate the growth of Manitoba’s film, television and music recording industries

History

MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC was originally created as a partnership between the federal and provincial governments in 1987 under the name of CIDO (Cultural Industries Development Office) to provide support to Manitoba’s film, video and music recording industries. In 1992, the agency became a not-for-profit corporation with sole funding received from the Department of Culture, Heritage and Citizenship. On September 1, 1998, MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC became a statutory corporation of the government proclaimed under the Manitoba Film and Sound Recording Development Corporation Act, with the appointment of a nine-member Board of Directors.

MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC has been pleased to provide sponsorship and/or partnership support currently and in the past to many national and international industry events and initiatives, including the Toronto International Film Festival, Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, Musexpo, First Weekend Club, Western Canadian Music Awards, Atlantic Film Festival, Gemini Awards, Genie Awards, NSI Online Film Festival and as partners in the Canadian Pavilion at Cannes International Film Festival, MIPCOM Television Market, North By North East (NXNE), South By South West (SXSW), Hong Kong Filmart, CFTPA Primetime Conference, American Film Market in Los Angeles, Pan-Western Mission to New York City and the Berlin International Film Festival.

MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC continues to support local events such as: Gimli Film Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, 100 Nons - La Chicane électrique, Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival, Manito Ahbee: A Festival for All Nations, Film Training Manitoba Film Expo, Winnipeg Film Group: Gimme Some Truth Documentary Conference, Groove FM Jazz Winnipeg Festival and Le Festival des Videastes du Manitoba.



INDUSTRY SUPPORT

MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC supports industry organizations in order to develop the business skills and talents of developing and established filmmakers and music recording professionals. Among the organizations that receive industry support from MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC are the National Screen Institute, the Winnipeg Film Group, the National Film Board of Canada, On Screen Manitoba and Manitoba Music through contributions to Aboriginal Music Program and the Manitoba Music and Motion Pictures Development Project, known as the M3P Program. The M3P Program supports the market development activities of Manitoba’s film and music recording artists and companies.
