MANITOBA MUSIC DELEGATION HEADS TO LA FOR FIRST TIME SINCE THE PANDEMIC BEGAN

Direct flights offer significant advantage to music industry in connecting to important music market

January 17, 2023, WINNIPEG—On January 23, members of Manitoba’s music industry will depart for Los Angeles onboard one of WestJet’s recently launched direct YWG-LAX flights. The mission will showcase Manitoba musicians and provide co-writing opportunities for professional artists.

“In the fall we had a very successful film industry mission to Los Angeles,” said Rod Bruinooge, Manitoba Film & Music’s interim CEO. “We want to do something similar for our incredibly talented music sector, and the new direct flights help provide that bridge connecting our musicians with influential LA music reps.”

“Los Angeles is a key market for the music industry, and Manitoba artists and companies are increasingly making valuable connections in the scene there. This mission allows us to support and promote a number of key artists as well as make important business connections to the industry in LA,” said Sean McManus, executive director of Manitoba Music.

The delegation, organized by Manitoba Music with support from Manitoba Film & Music, marks a return to Los Angeles for the first time since the pandemic began. Manitoba Music led a successful junket in February of 2019, just weeks before pandemic restrictions grounded travel. Over the past two years, Manitoba artists and companies have been meeting virtually with LA-based music companies. “When it comes to performance in particular, though, nothing beats face-to-face,” Bruinooge said.

The delegation will be promoting an industry showcase performance during the week-long mission. Industry leaders from both music and film companies are expected to attend to see Manitoba talent live on stage. Meanwhile, a cohort of singer/songwriters will be flexing their creativity in collaborative writing sessions with LA artists and producers. Artists taking part include Begonia, Field Guide, ASH HALO, JayWood, Slow Leaves and Cassidy Mann.

“This is an opportunity for export-ready artists in the province to perform and connect with LA industry members in a purposefully organized setting. Music supervisors, publishers, program directors, labels, agents, and others will be invited to the showcase and to meet one-on-one with the artists and their teams,” said McManus.
