Host Committee Welcomes Junos to Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (October 4, 2012) — In 2014, the best in Canadian talent will take centre stage in Winnipeg for the 43rd annual JUNO Awards.

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) made the official announcement today at Winnipeg’s MTS Centre, which served as the JUNO Awards broadcast venue when the city last hosted in 2005.

“We are so pleased to welcome the JUNOS back to Winnipeg – a city with such a rich and diverse musical history,” said Carole Vivier, CEO of Manitoba Film & Music and co-chair of the JUNO Host Committee. “Music is an integral part of our identity and how we’re known around the world. The JUNOS will put a spotlight on our local artists, while allowing Manitobans to experience music from all over the country.”

The JUNO Host Committee will oversee their local events during JUNO Week and act as a resource to CARAS in the planning and coordination of the 2014 JUNO Awards. The committee will be made up of various local stakeholders from the business, tourism, development and music industries. Vivier and Kenny Boyce, City of Winnipeg Film & Special Events Manager, will serve as co-chairs.

“We are delighted that Winnipeg will serve as the host city for this signature event in 2014,” said Boyce. “Winnipeg is experiencing a renaissance that has given the city an unmistakable buzz. Now is the perfect time to capitalize on this momentum. We are primed to host the 2014 JUNOS.”

Vivier and Boyce also served as co-chairs of the JUNO Bid Committee, which worked closely with the Province of Manitoba and City of Winnipeg in submitting a bid to CARAS to host the 2014 JUNO Awards.

In addition to the awards ceremony, JUNO Week 2014 will bring a variety of events including the JUNO Songwriters’ Circle and JUNOfest, which showcases over 100 national and local artists at venues around the city. Manitobans will have the opportunity to celebrate the JUNOS at both free and ticketed events.

Known for its vibrant music community, Manitoba is home to many JUNO winners and nominees. Last year, local artists The Wailin’ Jennys and KEN Mode took home awards while Doc Walker and Bruthers of Different Muthers (BODM) were recognized with nominations.
